InDesign allows bullet points to be added with one mouse click. But the options are much more varied than putting a bullet point in front of a paragraph.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Bullet characters help break up large blocks of text to present the content more clearly. There are so many customisation options that you can use bullet characters to add a certain style to your entire layout.<\/p>\n<h2>Which customisation options exist?<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.onlineprinters.ie\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/bullet-points-customisazion-options.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"td-modal-image aligncenter size-large wp-image-17773\" src=\"https:\/\/www.onlineprinters.ie\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/bullet-points-customisazion-options.jpg\" alt=\"A black background with three icons\u2014a yellow circle, diamond, and double arrow\u2014next to gray bars. Alternatively, you can use any glyph from any typeface as a bullet point. Windows already provides an awesome selection of different glyphs with its &#8220;Wingdings&#8221; and &#8220;Webdings&#8221; fonts. First select the text section to bullet and then click the\u00a0<span class=\"guideline\">Bulleted List<\/span>\u00a0button in the upper\u00a0<span class=\"guideline\">text formatting menu<\/span>. If you prefer a numbered list, click the Numbered List button directly below it. You can show it via\u00a0<span class=\"guideline\">Windows<\/span>\u00a0&gt;\u00a0<span class=\"guideline\">Styles<\/span>\u00a0&gt;\u00a0<span class=\"guideline\">Paragraph Styles<\/span>. Before creating a new paragraph style, make sure that the correct text section is selected. This will cause the current formatting of the text to be applied when creating the paragraph style. Next double-click the new paragraph style. Choose\u00a0<span class=\"guideline\">Tab Position<\/span>\u00a0in the panel that opens.<\/p>\n<p>A ruler allows you to set the\u00a0<strong>space<\/strong>\u00a0between the bullet characters and the start of the list item. First drag the left triangle over the ruler to the right and you will see the bullet points move accordingly in the background Then drag the right triangle to the left as far as possible to align the text and the bullet points with the rest of the text.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3\">Step 3: Formatting bullet characters<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.onlineprinters.ie\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/formatting-bullet-characters.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"td-modal-image aligncenter size-large wp-image-17776\" src=\"https:\/\/www.onlineprinters.ie\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/formatting-bullet-characters.jpg\" alt=\"A screenshot of the Paragraph Style Options dialog box in Adobe InDesign, showing the Bullets and Numbering section, with bullet character settings and Left Indent set to 4.2362 mm.\" width=\"696\" height=\"378\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You can format the bullet points and replace them with other characters by clicking\u00a0<span class=\"guideline\">Bullets and Numbering<\/span>\u00a0on the\u00a0<span class=\"guideline\">Paragraph Styles<\/span>\u00a0panel. The List Type menu allows you to specify whether to use bullet points or numbers. Under &#8220;Bullets&#8221; you see four more bullet options you can use for your bulleted list. Click a bullet to apply it to all\u00a0<strong>bullet items<\/strong>. Under &#8220;Text After&#8221; you can specify what to insert immediately after the bullet point or number. The &#8220;^t&#8221; means that a tab is set here by default.<\/p>\n<p>In our example, we want to increase the left indent of the bulleted list. To do so, set the &#8220;Left Indent&#8221; in the\u00a0<span class=\"guideline\">Bullet or Number Position<\/span> section to 4\u00a0mm. Then confirm your settings with\u00a0<span class=\"guideline\">OK<\/span>. To reuse the formatting in\u00a0<strong>further text sections<\/strong>, click\u00a0<span class=\"guideline\">Paragraph Styles<\/span> and\u00a0choose the newly created paragraph style here. This enables you to apply the style to all bullet characters instead of repeating it for each bullet.<\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-background custom-background-dos\">\n<p>Tip: If your style changes don&#8217;t immediately become visible, go to the\u00a0<span class=\"guideline\">Paragraph Styles<\/span> panel and check whether the &#8220;Preview&#8221; checkbox in the lower left corner is enabled. The interface includes search fields and options for finding and changing text.\" width=\"696\" height=\"378\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you don&#8217;t find a suitable bullet glyph among the options offered, you can also use your own graphic. First import it into InDesign like a normal image and format it to the size of the bullet character. Then use the\u00a0<span class=\"shortcut\">Ctrl<\/span> + <span class=\"shortcut\">F<\/span> shortcut to open the\u00a0<span class=\"guideline\">Find\/Replace<\/span> dialog box. Press\u00a0<span class=\"shortcut\">Ctrl<\/span> + <span class=\"shortcut\">C<\/span> to select one of the bullet characters you want to replace. Press <span class=\"shortcut\">Ctrl<\/span> + <span class=\"shortcut\">V<\/span>\u00a0to paste it into the &#8220;Find what&#8221; box.<\/p>\n<p>Then select the pasted graphic you wish to use as a new bullet and copy it via\u00a0<span class=\"shortcut\">Ctrl<\/span> + <span class=\"shortcut\">C<\/span>. Then click the @ next to the &#8220;Change to&#8221; box and choose\u00a0<span class=\"guideline\">Other<\/span>\u00a0&gt;\u00a0<span class=\"guideline\">Clipboard Contents, Formatted<\/span>. The text field should now contain &#8220;^c&#8221;. Next click\u00a0<span class=\"guideline\">Find<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>InDesign should then find the first bullet point.
