The software application is ideal to structure and format large amounts of text. To make sure that the content is easy to digest for the reader, the text should be aligned to deliver optimum legibility. For this purpose, InDesign provides the baseline grid.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The baseline grid in InDesign is one of the most elementary functions when it comes to editing text. In most projects, the ideal alignment is the first step in most projects to define the visual impact the designer is aiming for. By creating a baseline grid in InDesign, you have a wide range of setting options to structure the text to your preferences and specifications. If you put three columns of text on each page, the grid lines may be all you need to align the text. However, aligning the text to the same height on both pages can be tricky.<\/p>\n<p>The baseline grid relieves you of this task and structures the text automatically to your specifications. Rather, a magazine contains a host of smaller articles on various topics. Accordingly, you can decide whether to set up your articles as one coherent project or to create one project for each article in InDesign. In the example, we create an\u00a0<strong>article<\/strong>\u00a0for a magazine with 20 pages comprised of\u00a0<strong>two pages<\/strong>, starting on a left page.<\/p>\n<p>Start by setting up your project with the desired bleed settings. You now see the individual document pages with the\u00a0type area surrounded by a\u00a0<strong>pink frame<\/strong>. This is the area where the text will appear later on. Everything outside the type area is referred to as the\u00a0<strong>margins<\/strong>\u00a0and may be used either for white space or captions.<\/p>\n<h2>Step 2: Setting up the type area<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.onlineprinters.ie\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/baseline-grid-indesign-set-up-type-area.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"td-modal-image aligncenter size-large wp-image-17730\" src=\"https:\/\/www.onlineprinters.ie\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/baseline-grid-indesign-set-up-type-area.jpg\" alt=\"A Margins and Columns settings dialog box in design software like InDesign displays margin values in millimeters for Top, Bottom, Inside, Outside, and column settings with a single column, 4 mm gutter, ideal for precise layouts using the grundlinienraster.\" width=\"696\" height=\"378\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To format the type area, click\u00a0<span class=\"guideline\">Layout<\/span>\u00a0&gt;\u00a0<span class=\"guideline\">Margins and Columns<\/span>. On this panel, you can adjust the type area to your specifications. Here we set the upper margin to 30\u00a0mm, the lower margin to 20\u00a0mm, the inner margin to 25\u00a0mm and the outer margin to 40\u00a0mm. Choose three columns under &#8220;Columns&#8221; with a column spacing of 4\u00a0mm. Then confirm your settings with\u00a0<span class=\"guideline\">OK<\/span>.<\/p>\n<h2>Step 3: Adjusting the baseline grid to the type area<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.onlineprinters.ie\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/baseline-grid-indesign-adjust-baseline-grid.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"td-modal-image aligncenter size-large wp-image-17731\" src=\"https:\/\/www.onlineprinters.ie\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/baseline-grid-indesign-adjust-baseline-grid.jpg\" alt=\"Screenshot of Adobe InDesign showing a document with three-column guides. You now see a predefined view of your baseline grid. Next, define where to start the first line for the grid at &#8220;Start&#8221;. Because the upper margin of the type area was set to 30\u00a0mm, we also set the start of the baseline grid to 30\u00a0mm here. Under &#8220;Relative To&#8221;, choose &#8220;Top of Page&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The font size of 10\u00a0pt was also set previously and we add 2\u00a0pt because we don&#8217;t want the individual lines to <strong>adjoin<\/strong>. Therefore, enter 12\u00a0pt under &#8220;Increment Every&#8221;. Next, click\u00a0<span class=\"guideline\">OK<\/span>\u00a0to have your baseline grid adjusted to the type area. To do so, click the first text frame in your project and choose\u00a0<span class=\"guideline\">Font<\/span>\u00a0&gt;\u00a0<span class=\"guideline\">Fill with Placeholder Text<\/span>. Once the text has been added, you can show the baseline grid again via the drop-down menu and you will see that the text is not yet ideally aligned to the grid.<\/p>\n<p>To\u00a0<strong>finally align<\/strong> the placeholder text, first double-click on the first text frame and select the whole text via\u00a0<span class=\"shortcut\">Ctrl<\/span> + <span class=\"shortcut\">A<\/span>.
