Graphic designers could thus rest assure that the fonts and images in their artwork were printed as intended and that no errors were inadvertently introduced in the print shop, albeit with good intentions. This is still true today but there are now more options to edit a PDF.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Content:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Editing PDF files with Adobe\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"#pro\">Adobe Acrobat Pro<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#reader\">Adobe Acrobat Reader<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Editing PDFs with <a href=\"#alternativ\">alternative tools<\/a>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"#desktop\">Desktop tools (desktop applications for download)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#online\">Web-based tools (browser programs)<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"pro\">Editing PDF files with Acrobat Pro DC<\/h2>\n<p>The latest full version of Adobe Acrobat provides a wealth of functions and options to edit content, such as text and images in a PDF file. Click\u00a0<span class=\"guideline\">Edit PDF<\/span> on the right to show all editing options. Now if you click on an image or text, Acrobat will automatically recognise the object type and switch between the tools to edit the image and text, respectively.<\/p>\n<h3>Editing text<\/h3>\n<p>You can change the font type and size, the alignment, line spacing or tracking of selected text. However, some of these functions can be applied paragraph-wise only. You can also add bullet points. But bear in mind that hyphens between syllables will be preserved when inserting a line break and have to be removed manually.<br \/>\nAt the upper edge of the window, you also see the commands needed to add a watermark, headers and footers in the PDF.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.onlineprinters.ie\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/edit-pdfs-text.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"td-modal-image aligncenter size-large wp-image-17676\" src=\"https:\/\/www.onlineprinters.ie\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/edit-pdfs-text.jpeg\" alt=\"A German text is visible in a PDF bearbeiten editor. The marked text discusses colors and associations with nature, environment, and health.\" width=\"696\" height=\"447\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Editing text frames<\/h3>\n<p>The size and position of the text frames can be edited easily by using the\u00a0<span class=\"guideline\">resize pointer<\/span> or <span class=\"guideline\">move pointer<\/span> similar to a layout program. The only thing you can&#8217;t do is enter X and Y coordinates. To add a new text box, drag out a new frame using the\u00a0<span class=\"guideline\">Add Text<\/span>\u00a0tool in the upper menu bar and fill it with text. Unfortunately, this application does not allow linking text frames across multiple pages since PDF files have a page-based layout.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the extensive range of functions, editing text is far less comfortable than the smooth and intuitive workflows we are used to from other layout programs.<\/p>\n<h3>Editing images<\/h3>\n<p>An image in a PDF document can easily be moved or scaled. To do so, choose\u00a0<span class=\"guideline\">Edit PDF<\/span>\u00a0again and then click the image. Acrobat automatically recognises that it is an image and chooses the appropriate tool. Scaling and moving an image is done in much the same way as scaling and moving text frames. When scaling, make sure not to change the image resolution.<\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-background custom-background-dos\">\n<p>Tip: Press the\u00a0<span class=\"shortcut\">Shift<\/span> key\u00a0to scale proportionally as in other layout programs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>To move the image to another page, copy (<span class=\"shortcut\">CTRL\/CMD<\/span> + <span class=\"shortcut\">C<\/span>) or cut it (<span class=\"shortcut\">CTRL\/CMD<\/span> + <span class=\"shortcut\">Z<\/span>) and paste it on the target page (<span class=\"shortcut\">CTRL\/CMD<\/span> + <span class=\"shortcut\">V<\/span>). To rotate, crop and mirror images or change layers, use the tools provided in the pane on the right-hand side.<\/p>\n<p>The tool selection on the right also enables you to replace images. A lot of the commands can also be found in the\u00a0<span class=\"guideline\">context menu<\/span>\u00a0which you can open by right-clicking the object in question or pressing the\u00a0<span class=\"shortcut\">Ctrl<\/span>\u00a0key.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s also a breeze for Acrobat users to replace an image. Click the image and choose\u00a0<span class=\"guideline\">Replace Image<\/span>\u00a0in the menu on the right or use the context menu. The new image is selected and inserted into the existing image frame with its maximum dimensions without being distorted.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.onlineprinters.ie\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/edit-pdfs-replace-img.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"td-modal-image aligncenter size-large wp-image-17670\" src=\"https:\/\/www.onlineprinters.ie\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/edit-pdfs-replace-img.jpeg\" alt=\"A computer screen displays a PDF bearbeiten program with a photo of colored pencils arranged in a row. A context menu is open over the image, showing options like Cut, Copy, and Edit Image.\" width=\"696\" height=\"479\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"custom-background custom-background-dos\">\n<p>Tip: If you want to publish your PDF file but prevent specific elements from being edited, activate the element in question and protect it with a password by choosing\u00a0Restrict Editing\u00a0from the right pane.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3>Externally editing and updating an image from a PDF<\/h3>\n<p>You need to make corrections to an image from a PDF? No problem! To edit an image in a PDF document outside Acrobat, open the\u00a0context menu, choose the\u00a0<span class=\"guideline\">Edit Using\u2026<\/span> command and pick an application. The image is opened in the software application with a temporary name. After making the corrections, save and close it via\u00a0<span class=\"shortcut\">CTRL\/CMD<\/span> + <span class=\"shortcut\">S<\/span>. An image editing context menu appears over the right photo.\" width=\"696\" height=\"478\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Extracting content for further editing<\/h3>\n<p>While Acrobat Pro DC provides a wide range of editing options, it is not in the same league as professional layout software both in terms of functional scope and handling. If you want to create a new design in a layout application and incorporate text and images from a PDF file, you can do so in a few steps.<\/p>\n<p>Just copy the text from the PDF and paste it in the new document. When working with larger amounts of text, it is recommended to export it to Word or RTF format. But bear in mind that line return characters will be included.<\/p>\n<p>To save an image from a PDF, exit the &#8220;Edit PDF&#8221; mode, click the image using the standard\u00a0<span class=\"guideline\">selection tool<\/span>, open the\u00a0context menu\u00a0and chose\u00a0<span class=\"guideline\">Save image as\u2026<\/span>, specify the location, save, done.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.onlineprinters.ie\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/edit-pdfs-save-img.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"td-modal-image aligncenter size-large wp-image-17671\" src=\"https:\/\/www.onlineprinters.ie\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/edit-pdfs-save-img.jpeg\" alt=\"A computer screen displays a PDF bearbeiten interface with a photo of sharpened colored pencils arranged in a row. When you open the PDF file in Acrobat Reader, you can only select text using the\u00a0<span class=\"guideline\">selection tool<\/span>. However, you cannot edit but only copy the selected text.<\/p>\n<p>What is more, there are no tools available to edit images. But you can use a trick to copy an image into an image editor and edit it there. To do so, select the image with the\u00a0<span class=\"guideline\">selection tool<\/span>, open the\u00a0context menu\u00a0and choose\u00a0<span class=\"guideline\">Copy image<\/span>, the only command available. The image is copied to the clipboard. Now switch to your image editor, create a new file, paste the image into this file and save the new image file.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.onlineprinters.ie\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/edit-pdfs-reader-copy-img.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"td-modal-image aligncenter size-large wp-image-17674\" src=\"https:\/\/www.onlineprinters.ie\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/edit-pdfs-reader-copy-img.jpeg\" alt=\"A computer screen shows a PDF document in Acrobat Reader. Color swatches appear below each image.\" width=\"696\" height=\"423\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"alternativ\">Editing PDFs with alternative tools<\/h2>\n<p>If you have to edit the content of a PDF but don&#8217;t have any of the above Adobe programs, you can try out alternative services. This includes software products that can be downloaded and used offline. However,\u00a0<strong>web-based tools<\/strong>\u00a0are often better because they are\u00a0<strong>faster and easier to use<\/strong>. Just upload the PDF file, use the tool and download the edited PDF again.<\/p>\n<p>The general\u00a0<strong>problem<\/strong>\u00a0when using web services (directly in the browser) to edit text and images in PFD documents is owing to the fact that you\u00a0<strong>cannot access your local fonts<\/strong>\u00a0and accordingly any fonts that may be used in the PDF document. Editing images is also different from using a desktop application because some online services require the user to upload the images to the platform first in order to edit them.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"desktop\">Desktop services<\/h3>\n<div class=\"custom-background-grey\">\n<p><strong>Desktop versions to download:<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/pdf.wondershare.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/pdf.wondershare.com<\/a> (free trial version, paid full version)<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expert-pdf.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/www.expert-pdf.com<\/a> (free trial version, paid full version)<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/en.pdf24.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/pdf24.org<\/a> (no trial version, free)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>PDFelement by wondershare<\/strong>\u00a0is a real alternative to Adobe Acrobat. If you want to edit the text after uploading the PDF, you will notice that the font is changed to one of the standard web fonts after selecting it. Only single lines of text can be edited and the overall handling is far from optimal.
