The &#8220;content-aware scale&#8221; function in Photoshop allows you to accomplish this without losing visual content. We show you how to reshape your photos in a few steps.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Scaling problems are not new. Photoshop provides various options to resize photos with varying success. Some Photoshop users try to scale their images using\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"guideline\" lang=\"EN-GB\">Transform<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0&gt;\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"guideline\" lang=\"EN-GB\">Scale<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0to stretch the complete photo in one layer. But this frequently distorts the subject (B1). Another approach is to adjust the photo width via proportional scaling. Unfortunately, this often causes the subject to be cut off and changes the image composition (B2). The result is often not satisfactory even if only a part of the photo is scaled or the missing width is filled with identical colour values or patterns (B3).<\/span><\/p>\n<div id='gallery-1' With version CS4, Photoshop introduced the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"guideline\" lang=\"EN-GB\">content-aware scale<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0command to remedy this problem. This powerful feature may be new to some users. Unlike normal scaling in Photoshop,\u00a0<strong>this tool\u00a0accounts for important visual content<\/strong>\u00a0and tries to preserve it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">The final result is strongly dependent on the subject and is not always ideal. The function works best on photos with a clear separation between the subject and the background. But being quick and easy to use, the content-aware scale function is definitely worth a try for all kinds of photos.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Below, we will illustrate how the function works and which trick you can use to expand it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span lang=\"EN-GB\">How to scale simple subjects in Photoshop<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Step 1: Resolve the background layer<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.onlineprinters.ie\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/content-aware-scale-background-layer.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"td-modal-image wp-image-15046 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.onlineprinters.ie\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/content-aware-scale-background-layer.jpg\" alt=\"A Photoshop window shows a photo of white cherry blossoms on a blue background. When you click the function, Photoshop will show a bounding border around the photo. Drag a handle on the bounding border to scale the image. Photoshop is capable of detecting the cherry blossoms. The content-aware scale function does not change all pixels in the same manner but only those pixels that do not carry important content. Therefore, only the sky in the background is stretched but not the blossoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-background custom-background-dos\">\n<p style=\"line-height: 19.5pt; background: #F3F3F3; margin: 0cm 0cm 19.5pt 0cm;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">N<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">ote: When scaling in Photoshop, the result depends on the photos you are using. For the\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">content-aware scale<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\"> function to deliver good results, the subject should be clearly separated from the background.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Content-aware scaling of complex subjects<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">There are many photos where content-aware scaling does not immediately produce a satisfactory result. This can happen when the background is busy or when the background and the subject have similar colour values. In both cases, Photoshop has difficulties detecting the main subject. If this is the case, you have to define the main subject manually and exclude it from the scaling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.onlineprinters.ie\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/content-aware-scale-complex-subjects.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"td-modal-image size-full wp-image-15038\" src=\"https:\/\/www.onlineprinters.ie\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/content-aware-scale-complex-subjects.jpg\" alt=\"A woman with long brown hair and a teal shirt stands smiling in front of a dark gray brick wall. Photoshop has problems isolating the woman. Now if you apply the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"guideline\" lang=\"EN-GB\">content-based scale<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0command, not only the background will be stretched but the woman, too. The effect is especially noticeable in the woman&#8217;s face.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Step 4: Manually define the main subject and protect it<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.onlineprinters.ie\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/content-aware-scale-lasso-tool.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"td-modal-image wp-image-15048 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.onlineprinters.ie\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/content-aware-scale-lasso-tool.jpg\" alt=\"A photo editing program shows a woman with long brown hair standing in front of a dark brick wall. This is quickly done using the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"guideline\" lang=\"EN-GB\">Quick Selection Tool<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0or the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"guideline\" lang=\"EN-GB\">Lasso Tool<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0from the toolbox. To enable Photoshop to detect the selection, in this case the woman, choose <\/span><span class=\"guideline\" lang=\"EN-GB\">Select<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0&gt;\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"guideline\" lang=\"EN-GB\">Save Selection<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0to save and name the selection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.onlineprinters.ie\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/content-aware-scale-save-selection.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"td-modal-image wp-image-15049 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.onlineprinters.ie\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/content-aware-scale-save-selection.jpg\" alt=\"A woman with long brown hair stands in front of a dark brick wall. In our example, we saved the selection as &#8220;Woman&#8221;. Note: Afterwards, you have to undo the selection by using the shortcut <\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\"><span class=\"shortcut\">STRG<\/span> + <span class=\"shortcut\">D<\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0or for Mac\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\"><span class=\"shortcut\">Apple<\/span> + <span class=\"shortcut\">D<\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\"> or else the scaling will only be applied to the selection.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-background-grey\">\n<p style=\"line-height: 19.5pt; background: #F3F3F3; margin: 0cm 0cm 19.5pt 0cm;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">F<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">ine-tuning: You can optimise the selection of your main subject by choosing\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Select<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0&gt;\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Modify<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0&gt;\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Expand<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0and then smooth the edges or expand the selection by a few pixels.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Step 5:\u00a0Protect the selection and start content-aware scaling<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.onlineprinters.ie\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/content-aware-scale-protect-selection.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"td-modal-image size-full wp-image-15043\" src=\"https:\/\/www.onlineprinters.ie\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/content-aware-scale-protect-selection.jpg\" alt=\"A screenshot of the Photoshop interface showing the top options bar, with the Protect dropdown menu expanded. The upper options bar gives access to the saved selection. Only the background is stretched because we excluded the subject from the pixel calculations in Photoshop. The result is stunning. It is amazing how precisely Photoshop does these calculations.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"custom-background-grey\">\n<p style=\"line-height: 19.5pt; background: #F3F3F3; margin: 0cm 0cm 19.5pt 0cm;\"><strong><span lang=\"EN-GB\">T<\/span><\/strong><span lang=\"EN-GB\"><strong>ip<\/strong>:<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0Play around with the different setting options. If you are unsure whether you can achieve the desired result with the\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Content-Aware Scale<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0function, just try it out.
