One of the most helpful new features is the &#8220;Select Subject&#8221; tool with this function, Photoshop lets you select the most prominent subject in an image in a single click. This is a relatively quick and easy way to cut out objects in Photoshop. In this tutorial, we will show you how well the new tool works and which advantages it brings.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>Step 1: Proper image selection<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-13869 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.onlineprinters.ie\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/cut-out-in-photoshop-step-one.jpg\" alt=\"A person in a plaid shirt stands outdoors, with a computer \u201cImage Size\u201d dialog box over their neck, displaying image dimensions and settings. This is crucial to cut out subjects quickly and cleanly.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 2: Select the subject<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.onlineprinters.ie\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/cut-out-in-photoshop-step-two.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"td-modal-image aligncenter size-large wp-image-10421\" src=\"https:\/\/www.onlineprinters.ie\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/cut-out-in-photoshop-step-two.jpg\" alt=\"A man with a short beard and mustache, wearing a brown beanie and a plaid shirt, looks upward thoughtfully while standing outdoors with greenery in the background.\" width=\"680\" height=\"383\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To apply the new &#8220;Select Subject&#8221; feature in Photoshop CC 2018, first click\u00a0<span class=\"guideline\">Select<\/span>\u00a0and then\u00a0<span class=\"guideline\">Subject<\/span>. Photoshop will now analyse the image and <strong>automatically select<\/strong> the most prominent subject. After a short time, a\u00a0<strong>selection<\/strong>\u00a0will appear around your subject. The automatic selection made by Photoshop is already very good in most cases. But sometimes you need to finetune the selection further. In this case, you can support <strong>Photoshop&#8217;s outline recognition<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 3: Support outline recognition<\/h3>\n<p>Click again\u00a0<span class=\"guideline\">Select<\/span>\u00a0in the menu and choose\u00a0<span class=\"guideline\">Select and Mask<\/span>. You should now see a new window on the right and a panel with some new tools on the left. First set the view to\u00a0<span class=\"guideline\">Overlay<\/span>\u00a0in the <strong>right window<\/strong>\u00a0to see the areas which Photoshop selected automatically. Everything\u00a0<strong>coloured red<\/strong>\u00a0will be removed.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.onlineprinters.ie\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/cut-out-in-photoshop-step-three.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"td-modal-image aligncenter size-large wp-image-10422\" src=\"https:\/\/www.onlineprinters.ie\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/cut-out-in-photoshop-step-three.jpg\" alt=\"A photo editing software window displays an image of a young man in a brown beanie and plaid shirt against a red background, with editing controls visible on the right side of the screen.\" width=\"680\" height=\"383\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Next, use the tools in the\u00a0<strong>left panel<\/strong>\u00a0to refine the selection. This panel includes among others the\u00a0<span class=\"guideline\">Quick Selection tool<\/span> to recognize outlines and the\u00a0<span class=\"guideline\">Refine Edge tool<\/span> to select delicate objects such as beard hairs. Start with the\u00a0<span class=\"guideline\">Quick Selection tool<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>roughly cut out<\/strong> the desired areas. In the example, part of the hat was not selected correctly. You can use this tool to &#8220;paint&#8221; a selection using a round brush tip to make it easier for Photoshop to\u00a0<strong>recognize the edge<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.onlineprinters.ie\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/cut-out-in-photoshop-step-three-one.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"td-modal-image aligncenter size-large wp-image-10423\" src=\"https:\/\/www.onlineprinters.ie\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/cut-out-in-photoshop-step-three-one.jpg\" alt=\"A close-up of a persons bearded chin and neck on a computer screen, with photo-editing software open and adjustment panels visible on the right side. To select the hairs, choose the\u00a0<span class=\"guideline\">Refine Edge tool<\/span>\u00a0and paint over the hairs as you did before. Which areas you have to rework largely depends on the subject. The more accurately you work, the better the end result will be.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.onlineprinters.ie\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/cut-out-in-photoshop-step-three-two.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"td-modal-image aligncenter size-large wp-image-10424\" src=\"https:\/\/www.onlineprinters.ie\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/cut-out-in-photoshop-step-three-two.jpg\" alt=\"A person with a beard and brown knit beanie looks upward against a vibrant red background on a computer screen in an image-editing program, with adjustment settings visible on the right side.\" width=\"680\" height=\"383\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the <strong>right window<\/strong>, you can enable the so-called\u00a0<span class=\"guideline\">Smart Radius<\/span>\u00a0for a variable width refinement area around the edge of your selection. Set the slider to\u00a0<strong>1 px<\/strong>. You can also play around with the other sliders to fine-tune your result. In the example, the Smart Radius of 1\u00a0px is sufficient for the time being.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 4: Cutting out in Photoshop using an automatically generated layer mask<\/h3>\n<p>Next, open the\u00a0<span class=\"guideline\">Output Settings<\/span>\u00a0dropdown menu and enable the\u00a0<span class=\"guideline\">Decontaminate Colours<\/span> option to further fine-tune the selection. At the same time, the\u00a0<strong>output of your settings<\/strong>\u00a0automatically changes to\u00a0<span class=\"guideline\">New Layer with Layer Mask<\/span>. This is the optimal setting to prevent that image information gets completely lost or in case you want to make further corrections later on. This way, your original layer is preserved.\u00a0Finally, <strong>confirm<\/strong>\u00a0everything by clicking the\u00a0<span class=\"guideline\">OK<\/span> button.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.onlineprinters.ie\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/cut-out-in-photoshop-step-four.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"td-modal-image aligncenter size-large wp-image-10425\" src=\"https:\/\/www.onlineprinters.ie\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/cut-out-in-photoshop-step-four.jpg\" alt=\"A man in a brown beanie and plaid shirt is shown in a photo editing program.
